Illinois Points of Interest & Historical Landmarks |
Illinois is a state with a rich past and a great many points of interest, including hundreds historical markers and landmarks, with many buildings listed in the National Register of Historic Places. A Midwestern State spanning from the Mississippi River to Lake Michigan, Illinois is known as The Prairie State and the Land of Lincoln.
Abraham Lincoln lived for quite some time in the state and was elected President while there, and there are a number of historic places involving him, including places where he gave presidential campaign speeches, where he lived and where he was married. Ulysses S. Grant was also elected President from Illinois. IL history touches many topics such as the the Civil War, the early Industrial Revolution in America, and early events in religious history such as the first Mormon Town of Nauvoo, the town where Mormon leader Joseph Smith was jailed and assasinated, historic Lutheran churches, and historic Methodist churches, and more.
