Shalam Colony (1884-1907)

Shalam Colony, an experiment in spiritual cooperative living, was established here in 1884 on a 1,490 acre tract along the Rio Grande. The colony was founded by Dr. John Ballou Newbrough, a New York City dentist, and Boston Philanthropist Andrew Howland, and they worshipped a universal creator.
