Harvesting Oysters in San Leandro photo - picture in San Leandro, Alameda County, California Harvesting Oysters - After the transcontinental railroad was completed, fisheries began importing oyster spat from the East Coast. The spat, an early stage of the oyster, was set over existing beds to mature. The introuced species quickly overran the native Olympia oysters. Hydraulic mining debris and other pollution put an end to commercial oystering in San Francisco Bay early in the 20th century. Source: San Leandro by Cynthia Vrilakas Simons |
