On September 8, 1935, Dr. Carl Austin Weiss was living here with his family is a small frame cottage. About 9:30 that evening, U.S.Senator Huey P. Long was shot in the corridor just off the house chamber of the State Capitol. Weiss, the alleged assassin, was instantly gunned down by Long's bodyguards. Long died two days later at Our Lady of the Lake Hospital, then located across the lake from the Capitol. The Weiss home was removed in 1970 for the construction of the Department of Insurance Building
