Built ca. 1845, the hotel once located on this site was among the first public buildings in Raleigh. During the Civil War, it was used as headquarters for Col. Robert Lowry, future governor of Mississippi. Political figures, including Jefferson Davis, and Govs. Lowry, McLaurin, and Bilbo, made frequent campaign stops here.
