Across Moreno Valley stands Wheeler Peak, the highest peak in New Mexico. Rocks here are highly resistant granites and gneisses of Precambrian age. The valley is soft sandstones and shales covered by stream and glacial deposits. Placer gold was mined at Elizabethtown north of here in the 1860s.
