Marker Text: "Established in 1912 by Grand Lodge of Masons and Order of Eastern Star for their aged." In 1910 two Masonic orders, the Grand Lodge of Masons and the Grand Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star of North Carolina, agreed to build a home for their elderly members. The cornerstone for the first building was laid on January 9, 1912, and the first three residents were admitted in 1913. Two wings were added to the building in the 1920’s and the superintendent’s home built in 1931. A major new building was funded through the gift of Mrs. J. E. Latham in 1946. In 1971 the original main building was demolished to make room for a structure that would meet modern health requirements. The new administration building was dedicated in 1975.
The institution in time became the primary retirement facility for elderly Masons in North Carolina with residents from sixty-five of the 100 counties. The home employs physicians, nurses, therapists, pharmacists, and other medical professionals.
