Here under the leadership of Julius Wayland, a disciple of John Ruskin, a colony practicing Ruskin's socialist teachings existed from 1894 to 1900. Such ideas were disseminated through The Coming Nation, a journal with a worldwide circulation. Here women's suffrage was practiced. Prosperous factories produced chewing gum and men's leather suspenders. Internal dissension soon caused collapse of the colony. In after years the buildings and site were used for a boy's school.
