Zippin Pippin Roller Coaster photo - picture in Memphis, Shelby County, Tennessee The Zippin Pippin, formerly called the Pippin, is one of the oldest existing wooden roller coasters in the United States. It was initially constructed in the former East End Park in Memphis, Tennessee in 1912 by John A. Miller and Harry C. Baker of National Amusement Devices. The construction material was pine wood. As the park declined in popularity, the coaster was dismantled and relocated adjacent to the horse track in Montgomery Park, now known as the Mid-South Fairgrounds. Later in 1976, the City of Memphis opened the Libertyland amusement park around the ride and the Grand Carousel nearby. The Zippen was reportedly Elvis Presley's favorite ride, and he sometimes rented out the entire park so that he could ride it repeatedly without having to interact with the public. |
