Freemasons have long been involved in Texas history and politics, even before the days of the Republic of Texas. It has even been said that when General Santa Anna was defeated by Sam Houston, he "flashed" some Masonic signals in order to request special treatment due to their brotherly relationship within the Ancient Free & Accepted Masons.
