In this hotel on 18 October 1934 the directors of El Paso Kiwanis Club with Douglas Butler, president approved a motion by Dr. Brice Schuller to sponsor a New Year's day high school football game to raise funds for children's work. An all city team with players from El Paso, Austin, Bowie and Cathedral high schools was selected by sports editors Bob Ingram of El Paso Herald Post and Paxton Dent of the El Paso Times. Coaches were Mack Saxon and Harry Phillips of Texas college of Mines. Ranger Texas, high school, runner - up for the State title, was selected as the opponent. The game was played in El Paso High School stadium and the El Paso all-stars were the victors in a 25-21 thriller. Prior to the game a name selection contest was held and Dr. C. M. Hendricks entry Sun Bowl was chosen. From this modest start emerged the great Southwestern Sun Carnival and the annual Sun Bowl game. Other officers of Kiwanis in 1934 were Harris Walthall, 1st vice-pres., Ed Cone, 2nd vice-pres., George G. Matkin, treas. and Jack Dunn, Secy. Presented by The State National Bank of El Paso, Texas 18 March 1964
