    (July 1, 1838 - January 24, 1910) Private, Company E, 18th N.C. Infantry Regiment, in Civil War (1861-65). Fought in 8 major battles. Was captured twice. Severely wounded at Petersburg, Va. Paroled July 18, 1865. Moved to Texas in 1866. Elected First District Clerk, Camp County, Tex., 1876. Recorded --1970. Incise on back: Erected by children of Wm. Jacob Covington: Sally Covington Mahon, Albert Covington, Pearl Covington Dick, Mary Covington McDonald.
