Edgar Allan Poe Photo photo - picture in Richmond, Henrico County, Virginia Daguerreotype of Edgar Allan Poe, known as the Annie Daguerreotype. Of the 8 documented original daguerreotypes of Poe, the daguerreotype referred-to as the Annie and its close variant, the “Stella” photo, are the most challenging to pin down precisely. At different times each photographic plate has been stolen or has disappeared for lengthy timeperiods, and each were duplicated early on by other daguerreotypists. Both are so closely similar in appearance and dimensions that the 2 images have sometimes been mistaken for the same photograph. Combined, the various irregularities in descriptions have resulted in an unreliable documentation. The dependable information available suggests that the two dagguereotypes were shot at a photo op in Lowell, Massachusetts. The date of the sitting, despite some mentions of Autumn 1848, was likely in the early Summer of 1849; the complete number of plates produced at the sitting was only two — not three. Of these two originals, one was given to Mrs. Annie L. Richmond of Lowell, while the other known as the “Stella” daguerreotype, was given to the Stella Lewis, a poet. |
