The Edgar Allan Poe House contains the Poe Museum, dedicated to the famous American writer and poet known for the macabre and horror stories. Poe never actually lived in the house, but lived a short ways away, and the museum offers a large collection of original manuscripts, letters, first editions of his books, memorabilia and Poe family belongings. The Museum occupies the Old Stone House, which was built circa 1740, and is considered to be the oldest building in Richmond. It was built by Jacob Ege, a German who immigrated to the James River Settlements along with the family of his fiance. The Old Stone House was built for the bride. Edgar Allan Poe was known to have served as a member of the Junior Morgan riflemen who volunteered to provide an honor guard accompanymant to the Marquis de Lafayette when he visited Richmond in 1824, and Poe stood guard outside the house while the Marquis visited the family inside.
